Charmain Baker is the main character of House of Many Ways. She is a teenage girl who is a bookworm and doesn't know about magic, having been raised thinking it to be vulgar by her mother. William Norland, the Royal Wizard of High Norland, is her great-uncle.
When Charmain first appears, she is sitting in a chair reading while her family is talking. Her aunt arrives the next morning to take her to Norland's House. She meets Peter Regis and learns about the Lubbock. She is also appointed the temporary librarian to King Adolphus X and his daughter Princess Hilda. Here she also meets Sophie Hatter, Howl (in disguise as Twinkle), Calcifer and Morgan.
